--Of the different senses (sound, smell, taste, sight, touch) which do you most enjoy writing and which do you struggle with? Do you have an example of either of them from your recent work?

I think most people find sight the easiest, and I tend to as well. I often have to force myself to remember to include smell, taste, and touch because they can be such a challenge to communicate! Wrestling is an extra challenge because taste and touch are not generally part of the experience of watching wrestling, and I don't have any first-hand knowledge of how it physically feels to wrestle. I kind of have to guess at things like aches and pains and impacts!

I've decided (perhaps inevitably) that I need a little interlude before the final chapter... there's a bunch of things that happen that aren't part of the main story but are essential to describe in order to set up the main story. I'm almost done with that, though, so wish me luck for writing this weekend!

--Where is the scene you're in the middle of writing taking place? What sensory detail are you particularly satisfied with in your description of it?

Oh no, I'm kind of between scenes at the moment! The scene I just recently finished is set in the Thunderdome (that's the professional wrestling answer to the pandemic--it was an arena filled with huge LEDs that showed the faces of fans who had Zoom called in) I was particularly happy with the way I described the sound of the Thunderdome--there couldn't be any organic audience noise so they had to pipe sound in, and it was never organic, just a kind of dull roaring buzz that wasn't very satisfying. But fun to describe!

Where are your characters right now and how have you described it?

--Have you ever changed the direction of a WiP based on feedback from readers?

This obviously is for works being posted episodically, although I think it could work as a question about beta readers as well! I don't think I've ever made really major changes, but I do think reader feedback can influence me as I write, if I'm not finished. I know my sister's feedback has inspired me to go in and clear up some technical details (writing a wrestling match has the same difficulties as writing a superhero fight scene and it can get either muddled or tedious very quickly! You have to find the emotional heart of the fight and connect everything to that). I wrote over a thousand words yesterday and I am super happy about that! I'm hoping to be done with this chapter by the end of the weekend! And I just (like 15 minutes ago) read an excerpt from a freshly-published biography that confirms my suspicion about a bit of canon, so I'm very happy about that. (Now I just have to find a way to pirate the book, because the author is a Sandy Hook truther and I refuse to give her any money). I hope you are feeling vindication in your writing this week as well!

--Do the characters in your current WiP have any motivations that are hidden from other characters, or that they themselves are unaware of?

Hmmm, well, if they do, they remain hidden from me as well right now! Wrestlers are so cagey in interviews and rarely give much away, it's a sleuthing process to guess at anything...

No writing this week either, but I did do some research and canon review and am hoping to write this weekend! Here's to good research and writing for all of us!

--Is your current WiP inspired by any real-world events or experiences?

This is a very "duh" question for me this week, because it's a history/biography, so of course! Usually that's a lot rarer when I'm writing fiction, although sometimes I'll have some historical parallels.

This week has been brutal--classes started and so of course I immediately have no time, and also a houseguest came to visit for a night yesterday so the house had to be immaculate! Hoping to get back to at least an hour a day of writing starting tomorrow, though... How are things with you?

--Have you ever discovered new themes emerging in a WiP unexpectedly as you progressed?

I think this often happens with stories that take a while to write! I honestly think it can be hard to see that shift once I'm done because once I'm done the story is what it was meant to be, if that makes sense! In the book I'm writing, I think there's been an evolving theme of what it means to "tell a story" in wrestling, the way that some stories end up being told in small moments here and there that the wrestler adds in without the input of the "official" writers. The fact that so much storytelling is impromptu in wrestling makes it really fascinating!

I hope your writing is going smoothly this week!

--How do you use symbolism in your stories, and are there any important symbols in your current WiP?

I love me a good symbol! And I'm lucky with wrestling because championship belts are these INCREDIBLY fraught concrete symbols of success. Like, the tag titles symbolize cooperation and partnership, and singles titles symbolize individual success, so as a character develops, the titles that they win reflect where they are. (Half of my OTP is probably about to be in a tag team with SOMEONE OTHER THAN THE OTHER HALF, this is blasphemy!)

--What writers' styles have influenced your writing, both in the past and recently?

I don't know about you, but I often kind of get influenced by the books I'm reading and my writing shifts a bit to echo that (if it's a very distinctive style). I had been reading some hard-boiled detective stories (Robert B. Parker's Spenser series, which I love because he evokes 70s-80s New England so clearly) but lately I've switched over to a book of poetry by Mary Oliver, who I love but I can feel the tug toward writing more elliptically and I have to resist it, because it doesn't suit my book, lol!

I hope writing is going well for you! How was the week in writing for you?

--Do you have any unusual writing techniques you use?

I've kind of gotten into a routine that gets my mind in the right space: I make myself tea and light a candle and that's sort of my "You're now in Writing Mode" ritual. It helps me get into the flow a little faster, I think!

Writing is going pretty well here, though there aren't enough hours in the day. I'm actually taking off for the weekend in a few hours to go sit in a seaside spa and write with few distractions (I hope! Though writing on my iPad I bring the distractions with me...) I hope everything is going well with you!

How do you approach world-building in your WiP?

Of course for those of us writing fanfic, the answer is usually fairly simple (one of the joys of fanfic!), though if you're doing something in an AU or canon-divergence it can be a little more complex. Giving enough information about how the AU works and how it's different from the main canon can bee an interesting challenge!

For my book, my sister is reading the chapters as I go along, and that's useful because she doesn't know much about wrestling or its history, so keeping her in mind lets me know when I need to slow down and explain why X character showing up means that things are about to go badly, etc. I wrote about 2,000 words yesterday! I'm putting aside 3-4 hours a day right now because I really need to get done (or as close as possible) before classes start next month. I hope things are going well for your writing too!

I've happened to be in 12-hour plane rides for the last two weeks (then failed to crosspost from LJ) so I missed the posting of this! I got a lot of writing done and also got to spend some time with family. But back to discussing what we're currently working on!

--What genre or genres does your current WiP fall into?

Biography, pretty clearly. Or something in between biography and history (what's the difference? Is a biography just a single-person-focused history? I'm not sure!) With a fanfic bit of a bend to it! It's going pretty well, I think I've finished two chapters since I last posted? I've been doing a ton of review this week and hope to write another chapter by the end of the week. I have to hurry because once classes start again in mid-April my time will be sharply curtailed!

What genre are you working in? Are you mixing and melding any genres?

--What's the major conflict or challenge that the main character of your current WIP is facing?

I suppose this can be either external or internal, depending on what you're focusing on at the moment in your work! In mine, it's basically a lifelong challenge to reach the top of one's art/chosen profession, with each smaller challenge along the way just being steps to that big one. And they got there! About a year ago they achieved one of those highest goals, and I got the end of my story (and the end of the book is starting to be in sight!) What conflicts are your characters facing?

How does the setting of your current WiP contribute to the overall atmosphere of the story?

So what’s the setting—not for the whole WiP, I assume that has multiple settings—but for the scene you’re in the middle of right now? (Let’s get micro!)

To be fair, for me the setting is usually a wresting ring! But the location of the ring and the crowd make a big difference. This one is in Richmond Virginia, where Kevin is making his big debut, and he’s currently grouchy because Sami made HIS big debut two weeks ago in their home town of Montreal, where everyone knows and loves them. So the mood of the crowd has a big effect on how the debut is going to go—it works out just right because Kevin is going to be a bad guy, and having the crowd adore him as they would have in Montreal wouldn’t have helped establish him as a heel! But he’s still grouchy about it.

What effect is location having on your characters and the story in the scene you're working on right now?

--What are the themes or messages you're exploring in your current WiP?

Oh, that one is easy! The tensions between competition and cooperation, the need to balance independence and collaboration to reach the pinnacle of any creative art. I'm getting there! I desperately want to finish my grading and focus on the book, but I still have maybe 2 or 3 hours of grading to do. Wish me luck! And let me know what your themes and messages are shaping up to be!

--Who are the main characters of your current WiP, and what motivates them at the point you're at in the story?

My main characters are Kevin and Sami, two pro wrestlers. Their motivations shift a little bit across the years, but at the point I'm at I think they're mostly motivated by wanting to prove to the world that they're where they deserve to be--they finally have gotten to the place I call the base camp of Everest and they're about to start to head for the peak (they reached one of the peaks last year and that will be the end of my book!)

Have your main characters' motivations shifted across the story or from earlier drafts?

[personal profile] mithen
--Can you share a brief overview of the plot of your current WiP without giving away too much?

Oh, well, that's pretty easy: it's a history of the intertwined careers of two professional wrestlers in their twenty-year climb from the pool halls of Montreal to the main event at WrestleMania. Bang! Done. I mean, the book isn't, alas, but I did get 300 words written this morning and hope to get more done later. Wish me luck as I wish you luck!

--What's the origin story for your current WiP? What inspired it?

For fanfic, of course, that's often (but not always) a moment in canon, but I know some of us are working on original works too! For me, the long-ago seed was coming to realize that the wrestling matches these two wrestlers put on, even though they were in different companies, made a coherent story when you put them together. So I set out to figure out what story ALL their matches told if put together, and here I am! School is wrapping up this week and next week so writing is slow, but I'm hoping to sit down and hammer out the rest of the current chapter this weekend. What's the very beginning for your current work, what put that creative gleam in your eye?

The holidays took it out of me! They're always busy but of course this year, the first without my mother, they were especially difficult )Christmas was her holiday, she loved it so much. I went up into the Japanese Alps to find some snow and just sat all weekend in a snowstorm, sitting in an outdoor hot spring watching snow fall. It was nostalgic and totally different at the same time, which helped. I hope your holidays were peaceful and bright.

As usual for the first post of the year, I'll ask for either your 2023 in review or your writing hopes for 2024! For me, of course, my main goal is to finish the book I'm currently working on. I'm about 66% done--I wanted to be done by the end of the year, but that didn't happen, alas. But I've got spring break that I can dedicate to the goal and am hoping I can get there quickly. The project seems rather snake-bit--my publisher got in touch with me to tell me that his sister had fallen down on Christmas Eve, struck her head and died a few days later, so we're both struggling with tragedy now. Here's hoping we can make it across the finish line... And here's hoping whatever goals you set yourself in 2024 come true for you!

Who in your current WiP is the most cheery?

Oh, and easy one! Sami and Clark are both outwardly very sunny, cheerful people, two of the most cheerful in their fictional worlds! I do think both of them have a melancholy streak underneath the cheer, and that's one of my absolute favorite kinds of characters, always. It's so fun to write that kind of character (and its pair, the outwardly prickly person with a heart of gold). Is your current WiP a cheery one?

--Who in your current WiP is most sarcastic?

It's funny, I think most people would assume Kevin, but actually Sami is the one with the really cutting sarcastic attitude! He just employs it against bad people so it manages to be endearing.

In the superhero world, Bruce tends to win out, though part of what I love about the animated series Clark is that he's but a quiet snarkiness to him as well.
