May. 22nd, 2020 04:45 pm--How much ‘world building’ takes place before you start writing?
Obviously with most fanfic the world-building is done for you a lot of the time, but when I write an AU I can get really involved and go a bit overboard. Mostly because it's just fun to learn a lot about another time or place! I'll often start doing research while I'm working on something else and build up my knowledge for a while.
I got some writing done last week on my gender-swap fic, which was nice! Just about to get Clark and Bruce in the same space after six years and see how many sparks fly... How about you?

Date: 2020-05-24 02:26 pm (UTC)Historical fic is a favorite for me. I love researching the details and using what knowledge I already have to create a story immersed in the past.
I also enjoy coming up with my own AUs that require a lot more work in coming up with the details. Setting is very important in a story.
Editing my original novel right now, and writing a few shorter fanfic pieces. I also started a longer piece and am just ambling along with it. Very relaxing! :)

Date: 2020-05-24 08:02 pm (UTC)How much world building happens before I jump into writing depends on the piece. As I write a lot of fanfiction in canons with exisiting but often sprawling and contradicting world building, it becomes more about settling on what lore I want to go with. When I work on original sotry worlds it also depends on if it's something grounded in reality or fantasy&science fiction to decide how much world building has to happen before I am comfortable writing.
Often I work in minor universes with short mini-series outlined canon though and then I go wild with world building and research before I can sit down and write even a drabble. :P
Not a super productive week for many personal and work reasons. But new ideas keep popping up.
