Open Thread: Oracle Hotline
Mar. 6th, 2020 09:15 amI've been in the US and Peru! And now am back in Japan trying to figure out how we're going to conduct university life when no group over 10 people is supposed to gather in one place. During entrance exams. It's going to be a challenge.
--What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
"Interesting," I don't know about! I do think I overuse adverbs, alas. For "quirk" more than "flaw" I look at the essay I'm almost done writing and catch one, which is a tendency to use parenthetical comments to get my own emotions across in an otherwise factual passage. For example' "After his loss (another loss, so many losses), Sami picks up the mic and informs the applauding crowd that they’re what’s wrong with WWE, what’s wrong with him."
What have you been working on and what quirks have made it into your writing of it?

Date: 2020-03-06 02:36 pm (UTC)Interesting writing quirk? I suppose it's my tendency to capitalize words that I shouldn't, but I love capitals! I think President of the United States looks far better than president of the United States. ;)
My original writing has been going full-steam ahead. I've got some fanfic in the queue, and I may finally be getting around to the Han/Luke wedding! Oh, and Evil fandom is giving me fresh ideas. :)

Date: 2020-03-06 03:59 pm (UTC)Hmm. Everybody grins? Commas are either Not A Thing Which Exists or they're absolutely everywhere? I really don't know. Run-sentences are definitely something I watch out for but I don't know what else other than that.
I've finished one Harry Potter fanfic for a big bang (and thus can't talk about it for AGES) and started another. Which is very weird after writing only original fic for so long. Also pondering a super-epic MCU fic with Angel-Steve Rogers going waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in time to stop literally everything in the MCU from happening. No idea if I'll actually do it but it's being noodled.
Along with a romance novel with a nonbinary black character and a pan black character falling in love in Japan, a novella that's just kicked off, noodling on finishing off a fantasy series of mine and editing/submitting/getting responses on short stories for various markets. I R Busy! But it's fun so I don't mind. :D

Date: 2020-03-10 12:28 pm (UTC)They cancelled the St. Patrick's Day Parade here! Probably the Boston Marathon goes next. *smh*
I get wanting to be cautious, but all this sounds like overreaction.

Date: 2020-03-10 03:53 pm (UTC)I don't know that it is an overreaction? I mean, not really? I think it's more a matter of trying to keep it from being too big too fast and overwhelming the hospitals.
At least, I'm willing to do all the things, you know washing hands and not touching my face (as much as I normally do), and being prepared if it keeps people with weakened immune systems safe and/or keeps me from getting sick.
The whole toilet paper hysteria thing? Now that's a total overreaction!

Date: 2020-04-28 09:44 am (UTC)Hmm. Someone very "kindly" implied to me that I always try to be quirky in my wriitng, and I still don't know what they mean exactly. :P
I would say: LOOONG NATIVE LANGUAGE STYLE SENTENCES are a thing. Too many facial expressions. Em-dahses everywhere.
