--I love how I describe things when…

Oh, I love describing moments of intense emotion, when I feel a little more free to let my sentences tumble forward a bit breathlessly.

And I did get writing done this week, I'm very happy about that! I finished the emotional climax point of the story and just have to write a denouement sex scene, and I will have this story off my plate. Lesson learned* I am not in a place to write multi-part stories right now. D:

How about you, what are describing that's making you happy as the year winds down?

I think my favorite thing to describe is the sort of scenery that the characters have the strongest opinions of. Which kind of makes no sense but...

Okay, so chocolate chip cookies. Everyone loves chocolate chip cookies. So a character associates them with their grandma who was mean and abusive and they're flashed back to their grandma being nasty-sweet, making chocolate chip cookies every single time they're about to do something horrible to the younger character. And then the character, years later, decades later maybe, is somewhere with someone they like or love and they're given chocolate chip cookies because, of course, EVERYONE loves chocolate chip cookies, right?

Yeah, describing that. That scene right there where the associations are so strong and so very unexpected and it's all opinion and history and character coming through. That's my favorite thing to describe in part because it's so darn hard to do it well.

I finished the novel from last week, plus two more short stories for a class I'm taking so I'm doing well. I've got one more that I want to write before Saturday night. And I'm pondering next year's schedule / goals and what novel to hit next and having fun with all of that.

Congrats on finishing your story! I think knowing what you can and cannot do at any time is really important. Otherwise the writing gets too frustrating to be fun. Have a great week Mithen!

I enjoy describing surroundings. I love writing about colorful trees in autumn and pumpkin patches (Hi, Linus!) and houses and workplaces and...well, you get the picture. ;)

The surroundings are very important. They can make the reader feel cozy, joyful, fearful, on edge. The Kent farmhouse gives us an idea of who Clark is, just as Wayne Manor does for Bruce. Paradise Island and its Greek buildings give us Diana's past and what keeps her returning.

An atmosphere is created: Clark returns to the farm because he draws strength from it, as Diana does from Paradise Island and Bruce from the Manor.

Have you ever stood in a building that's well over a hundred years old? Perhaps centuries (in the rest of the world)? The Egyptian pyramids whisper their past to those who care to hear them. The Roman Colosseum. The Old North Church in Boston.

Ha, if you get me started, I'll never stop! :)

Writing goes well. I don't know if any of my holiday-themed stories will be posted before Christmas, but I'm just going to take my time and enjoy the process. :)

That's a very good point! Growing up in the circus definitely had an effect on Dick. :)

I like how you've put that. There are those moments when the scene is so drunk on emotions that the words just flood out. I love high drama and action, because pacing wise it has become a rush to write and descriptions flow better then.

I hope you get back into the place to write multi-part! But as long as life is stressful write what's short and fun.

Oh, I love describing fast, intense moments. When things are out of control and your heart is racing and it's just getting through to the next moment? That's what I like to write. Most of my writing involves problematic things and violence sooo yeah. xD

I'm in the midst of writing a terribly problematic fic and it's being very troublesome. As much as I like to write bad things, sometimes it can be hard. And Berserk is a very depressing series to watch and read. But I'll get through this! It's an idea I've had for awhile and it'll be nice to have it finished.
