--What music does your most recent POV character sing to when no one else is around?

Yay, this week it's actually Clark Kent! And of course, when writing superheroes, the question of which Clark Kent is very important. In this case it's alllll the way back from Superman Returns, the Brandon Routh version. And since this is a story from my decade-long (!!!)* series "Music of the Spheres," this is... a surprisingly fraught question! Within the canon of the story, Clark always struggles not to hear the enthralling music of the universe that he heard during his trip to Krypton, but it's always tugging at him and calling him back. So on the whole he doesn't like listening to music at all anymore, and he definitely doesn't indulge in singing, it's too risky. He tries to listen to heartbeats and tectonic plates and birdsong instead, keeping him grounded here on Earth.

I only got a few sentences into this latest story this week, but it's always good to come back to an extremely old and well-loved version of the characters. What has your attention this week?

*George W. Bush was president when I started writing this series in Sept. 2006. What the hell.

*huge grin* Baby lullabies. No, really! I'm writing from Xun's point of view right now and she pretty much doesn't sing much. But when she does, generally while gardening, she sorta mumble-sings lullabies under her breath to the plants. She's not the sort to be embarrassed by it. She's just very aware that she has a tin ear and no voice at all.

This week has been a low writing week because my mom is visiting. I haven't lost my streak but I've barely gotten my minimum of 500 words per day. She's going home on Saturday morning, though, so things should get back to normal then.

XD Eee, another installment of Music of the Spheres? Eeee! I love that one! (And for the record I refuse to believe that it's been that long. Nope. Not going to accept that.)

Good luck getting more writing done!

Before I answer, JEEZ you've been writing that for almost 11 years, that's insane. And awesome.

Dorian sings most of the things he sings in front of others when no one is around, and if he can he likes to be playing his guitar at the same time. He sings while he works, while he does almost anything by himself, partially to drown out Serathus and partially because it just makes him happy and he's good at it. He's a big metal fan, and his big hobby was staying current with bands as they evolved and picking up new ones as they came on the scene, so his tastes are fairly diverse, though many metalheads would call him insufficiently hardcore because he likes power/symphonic/classical metal over heavier styles like thrash/death/black etc. If his guitar is not accessible, he likes to hum guitar riffs as often as vocal melodies. I even imagine one of his more 'meet cute' moments with Mahir being him absently humming the guitar riff from a song they both know and him being pleasantly surprised when Mahir starts humming the vocal in response.

BUT that is not to say he does not have his less-manly musical interests. I hesitate to include his non-metal rock passions here (he loves him some Queen), he's not above pop. As revealed in a relatively recent scene, he's a religious viewer of the Eurovision Song Contest. His all time favorite pop act is ABBA, but he'll latch onto a new favorite each decade/major shift in music or so. In the 80s, he would listen to a little new wave, but he mostly left that to Dade, he'd know enough to be able to hold a conversation with Dade about Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys but not enough to own any albums. In the 90s, if you held a gun to his head he'd admit to a weakness for Ace of Base and then beg you to never ever repeat that. In the 2000s it was pop rock like Maroon 5 and the Killers, more recently it's been Lady Gaga (mostly Heerah and Dade's fault), and gaining a retroactive respect for Madonna for Sander.
