Open Thread: Oracle Hotline

Random life/travel/stress stuff has kept me distracted, but I am back! And actually wrote some fiction! I'm actually having some interesting thoughts about the way I approach canon right now--I have a tendency to put lines and moments together and come up with theories about why characters are doing what they're doing, and people often respond with "But since they didn't SAY IT CLEARLY, it can't be correct." I do think my background as a fanfic writer makes it so I approach the canonical text differently, it hones the tendency to try and read subtext and implications. But, uh, let's just say I don't feel comfortable telling people "Oh, my background of writing characters in non-canonical romances inclines me toward paying attention to subtext," so... yeah.

How goes the writing? How goes life? The question for this week:

--Share a line from your WiP that you think sums up its premise.

Hah, well, I just finished writing the line I picked up the whole story for, cheesy and gushy and on-the-nose as it is, so:

Sami felt a sudden odd rush of utter pride well up in him. “My friend is fucking spectacular,,” he announced. “He’s the bravest, strongest, most self-sacrificing person I know, and I love him with all my heart.”

How about you? What sums up the main idea of your current WiP?

:D Hey! You're back! I've missed your posts. Yay for that and for writing getting done. *amused snort* Yeah, I wouldn't tell people that, either, but it sure does work that way, doesn't it?

One line???? *dies* Nope, no can do. Have segment:

"You idiot!" Chikondi bellowed the instant Iseul's head broke the surface. "I thought you broke your neck."

The last spent bits of air burst out of Iseul's mouth as he laughed, gasped, took a nose full of water and laughed while coughing. Chikondi sat on the battered grass at the edge of the pond, eyes too wide. He stared at Iseul. His fingers shook.

"Nope," Iseul said once he could stop laughing, stop coughing. "It's quiet under there."

This is the last short story I wrote, with mercenaries and poisonous leeches about to attack but it's all about their relationship so yeah. I'll go with that.

Of course, now I'm writing a novella with wolf shifters (one deaf and the other with an amputated leg) that's focused on recovery from trauma, shifting personality changes once you have resolution for the trauma, and falling in love with not just each other but your family, too. It's not one I can share a bit of because I'm writing it to submit to a collection call over at LessThanThree Press. Fingers crossed I get in!

Good luck with your totally awesome story because that's seriously a great line for Sami!
