Open Thread: Oracle Hotline
Jan. 12th, 2018 09:11 amI was in Tokyo being happy and stressed out last Friday (in good fannish ways!) so no post! But we are back to it this week, even though time is tight and nonfiction writing is eating up my fiction writing life!
--List the circumstances over which your most recent character has no control.
Oh no, that's Sami, and right now he's feeling cocky enough to say he can control everything, but he's very wrong: he controls his bosses even less than he thinks he does; I'm not even sure he has as much control over his best friend as he thinks he does. I'm afraid he's going to have to learn some hard but valuable lessons about things being out of his control soon...

Date: 2018-01-12 04:36 am (UTC)Hmmm, I'm working on a new novel in a steampunk universe (sequel to Blood Worms if you're curious) and the POV character is Esme. She's got... so many things she has no control over! *laughs*
Alien world, murderer running around, conspiracies, alien monsters, politics, everyone around her except her wife Chinwendu, just about everything is out of Esme's control. Not that she cares all that much. She just glares at everyone, takes out her notebook and starts interrogating them anyway. That's her way of controlling what she can: understanding what's happening. (and then selling the data or killing people, as appropriate)
She's so much fun to write!
Good luck getting back at the writing!

Date: 2018-01-15 06:10 am (UTC)I think Sanosuke was probably my last POV, but Saitou is much more interesting for this question, so I will go with him. In this fic, I have genderbent Saitou (and his wife Tokio) and so, to keep their kids biological to them, Saitou is the one that carries him. Being known as a woman is not particularly high up on his lists of things he likes, but it is what it is, and he enjoys having children. So much is outside of his control, more than just being a woman that was always much more suited to being a man; the world he grew up in has changed drastically and the cultural and traditions he knows and practices are being threatened. And then, a cocky young man who has always been quite uncontrollable, stumbles back into his life...
It was a bit of a random idea I had one day, being intrigued with Saitou as a woman, but still presenting as a man. All the intricacies of needing to hide himself in certain ways, while still being a fairly public figure. He's not mournful of being born in the 'wrong' body, but it is a matter of safety for himself and his family, should he be found out on a wider scale. And then throw Sanosuke in and well~ It's been a fun little thing to work on the past few weeks.

Date: 2018-05-23 05:20 am (UTC)Characters who just keep going while everything is in chaos around them are the BEST. And so fun to write, especially when they're exasperating to the others around them!
(Obviously still very far behind, alas! Is that simply my life now? Very possibly...)
