I'd say that Padma's worst moment was when her parents threw her out for being queer and utterly unrepentant about it. She's is never, ever, ever going back because it was just that bad.
Jaden's most devastating moment has yet to happen. It's the moment (in about 10 chapters or so) that her relationship with Padma is real. Really real. Something that could last for the rest of their lives. That she'd be happy spending her live at Padma's side.
Because Jaden's never allowed herself to dream of that and the thought of screwing it up when it looks so good just about destroys her.
...Yes, I am nervous about writing this scene but I'm building the whole novel around it so I guess I'll just have to give it my best shot. *whines a little*
