The mental hospital story, When The Leaves Fall (Naked City fandom), is pretty much taking up my fannish creativity right now, so I'll talk about Adam.

The story is tricky. Is Adam really seeing what he says, or is it his mental illness? He's confused, can't remember much of his past except for the lover/partner he lost, and tries to navigate life at Ocean View, a private hospital with many amenities, but it's still a mental hospital.

His old boss, Lieutenant Mike Parker of the NYPD, often fills in the blanks for readers as he remembers his brilliant detective's career, mourning the loss of his services and the loss of Adam's partner Frank to a killer. Frank was also a friend. Mike figured out they were lovers but never said anything, and understands the depths of Adam's anguish, but is unsure of telling Adam's doctor. Homosexuality in the '60s was not accepted, even among many psychiatrists, who classified it as a mental illness.

Adam's struggle is dealing with his grief, his breakdown, and his loss of memory except for bits and pieces.
