I'm sure that someone out there appreciated you being the first! And I agree it can be fun writing for a character that you don't know much about it. Leaves a lot of room for interpretation and creativity.
I started writing fic in general because the ship I liked (Clark/Oliver in Smallville) was fairly rare, but the rarest ship I've written for is probably Jess/Logan from Gilmore Girls. It was originally written as a request in one of those fic memes back in the day, and it was the only fic for the ship in the AO3 tag for a while.
